http://en.m.wikipedia.org/ Currently when one focuses the search box, a search is conducted automatically. On mobile browsers, this will often close the keyboard as a result causing some confusion. I would have expected no search to take place. This is reproducible on desktop and mobile browsers such as Firefox for Android
Can you give steps to reproduce? Everything looks normal for me... Does focusing the search show the message "Type search term above and matching page titles will appear here." or does it cause a redirect to another page?
Created attachment 12032 [details] Screenshot (Firefox for Android) (In reply to comment #1) > Can you give steps to reproduce? Everything looks normal for me... Download Firefox for Android (any development channel) i) Head to http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla ii) Tap the input search field at the top iii) The keyboard is invoked, and is dismissed, it looks like a search is conducted and focus on the field is lost. > Does focusing the search show the message "Type search term above and > matching > page titles will appear here." It does say that; see attached screenshot
Ah I think I understand. I think you are saying 2 things. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks very much for this valuable feedback! #1 You are saying that there is a problem in Firefox in that the keyboard is dismissed - clicking search should show this screen with the keyboard so a user can begin typing and search. The fact the keyboard disappears is confusing and should be fixed. This is not the case on Android 4 's native or Chrome browser. Can you confirm? #2 You dislike the fact that search takes up the full screen? The behaviour of making search take up the entire screen is by design. If you disagree with this I suggest you start a discussion around why either on MediaWiki.org or on one of our mailing lists - either mobile-l or wikitech-l [1] so that other people can chip in and we can reach consensus. This is a non-issue in the Android stock nor Chrome's browser. I forgot to state that this seems to be only an issue in Firefox for Android and on Firefox on desktop (i.e, as soon as you tap to focus the search box, it looks like the focus is lost; something on-tap is revoking focus (thus dismissing the keyboard, and focus is lost on desktop)). To reiterate with some easier steps to reproduce on desktop; in Firefox visit: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/?useformat=mobile, and focus the input search box - as soon as you focus, the focus is lost and the URL becomes http://en.m.wikipedia.org/?useformat=mobile#mw-mf-search
Ahh now I understand. Thank you so much for bug report.
I had a chance to test this out and this works for me. Which version of Firefox android/Firefox mobile are you using? Which version of Android are you running? When I load up Firefox Android (20.0.1) on my android (4) or Firefox for desktop (13.0.1) the focus is kept on the input. I click search box, keyboard shows...
Interesting this appears to be fixed. Something must have changed on your end. Resolving this, thanks for checking. Will re-open if I stumble upon this again.
