horrible horrible hack, but use a 'magic' parameter to get us a 'wmf android' and 'wmf iOS' tags for uploads from either respectively.

This will be the authoritative way of figuring out which files were uploaded from those places, even after they are deleted. EventLogging can not be relied upon for long because it is now opt-outable.

Can we use AbuseFilter to check for the templates we add and add the tag, rather than hacking MF?

As the Mobile Apps Team is focussing on the new, native Wikipedia app, the Commons app is no longer being maintained by the Wikimedia Foundation. I am WONTFIXing all open Commons app bugs to reflect that we will not be spending time fixing them.

For the full story, see this thread on mobile-l: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/mobile-l/2014-September/thread.html#7974
