Currently when you log in for the first time there is no indication of what is happening. Nothing seems to be happening until the sync provider finishes and then all of your photos show up.

This has now been implemented.

I don't see it implemented on the Android app (just did a pull).

Good catch. It does on iOS but not on Android.

It's not perfect, I'll file a separate bug for the borkedness.
