This isn't broken (we don't use avatars), it's just a poorly implemented feature (it makes the request regardless of whether you have an avatar plugin installed).

When I briefly turned on gravatars for testing...that's what you're probably remembering.

With our recent gerrit upgrade, there will are even more requests for avatars.

However, all of them fail on purpose, since we do not use avatars.

Can we flip this bug around then?

Rather than complaining that they're seemingly broken, make this about stopping the requests altogether?
