Description Erik J 2013-05-26 16:16:33 UTC
1. go to a page with no interwiki links
2. try to add a link to another language wikipedia
3. fail.

I've tried to add interwiki links to:
 sv:Ferropolis + en:Ferropolis
 sv:Skovelhjulsgrävmaskin + en:Bucket-wheel excavator

It doesn't work I get a very cryptic error message about Q123123.

I would like to note that this is confirmed from the last bugreport, but that was closed for some reason.

Please describe exactly what you did, what link you wanted to add to what Wikidata item and what "fail" means.

> I've tried to add interwiki links to:
> sv:Ferropolis + en:Ferropolis
> sv:Skovelhjulsgrävmaskin + en:Bucket-wheel excavator

sv:Ferropolis and en:Ferropolis are already linked to each other. They are both in the Wikidata item Q896647, see http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q896647 .

sv:Skovelhjulsgrävmaskin and en:Bucket-wheel excavator are also linked to each other. But they belong to the Wikidata item Q278222, see http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q278222 .

If you want to merge two different Wikidata items you have to remove all links from the item with the higher number first. I don't have a problem doing this. But in this case this makes no sense because Ferropolis and Bucket-wheel excavator are two different things. They both need their own Wikidata item and should not be merged.

There is still no bug around. This report is invalid for the same reasons as the one before.

First of all I was of course talking about failing to link Ferropolis in Swedish to Ferropolis in English, which is how the User Interface works when you are using Wikipedia. (and Failing to link sv:Skovelhjulsgrävmaskin with en:Bucket-wheel excavator). When I wrote this bugreport the swedish articles were not linked to the english articles, which you should have been able to tell by just looking at the history:

http://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q278222&diff=46790614&oldid=26903070
http://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q896647&diff=46804055&oldid=32304878

That said I don't seem to be able to reproduce this bug today, even though I have had it happen a couple of times during this month. I can try some more unless something has changed since last week?

But I managed to create an error message which is worded in the same way as in the problem I had with Ferropolis above.

1. go here
http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thulin_Typ_H
2. click link article
3. write lang: en
4. write article: Mainpage-url

Result:
a very strange an meaningless error message.

Expected result:
Something that explains what I need to do to make it work.

TMg I'm not really sure why we don't understand each other, when I read your answers I see that you understand that there is a problem. But you seem to think that it's ok just because it's easy for you work around.
Comment 5 TMg 2013-05-28 08:06:22 UTC
[[en:Mainpage-url]] is a redirect to [[en:Main Page]], see http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mainpage-url&action=edit .

[[en:Main Page]] is Q5296 in Wikidata, see http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5296 .

[[sv:Thulin Typ H]] is Q10697351 in Wikidata, see http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q10697351 .

Nobody should and nobody can add a link if it is already used in an other Wikidata item. That's exactly what the error message says: "Der Websitelink [[enwiki:Main Page]] wird bereits vom Datenobjekt [[Q5296]] verwendet." English: The link [[en:Main Page]] is already used in Q5296. This is true. There is nothing wrong with the wording of this message.

There can't be a solution for your problem. It is forbidden to add a link to two Wikidata items and it always will be.

If you think a message should be more descriptive you should not call your report "Impossible to add interwiki links if the article has none" because this is not true in any way. Instead please copy and paste the message or make a screenshot instead of talking about a vague "fail" or "strange and meaningless message", describe what you think is missing in the message and give examples how you think the message should be in your opinion.

I guess you are talking about http://translatewiki.net/wiki/MediaWiki:Wikibase-error-sitelink-already-used/en . See #41602, #47217 and #48224 for actual bugs related to this message.

Another example

http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7382181

Trying to add a link to sv-wiki Kolasås, will not work. This is a bug I don't understand how it could not be a bug.

Kolasås already has an entry in Wikidata for some reason.

The error message you get in this case tells everything:

"Site link Kolasås is already used by item Q10547048. Perhaps the items should be merged and one of them deleted? Feel free to ask at Project chat if you are unsure."

In other words: You are not allowed to add a link twice. What I don't understand is: How can this be a bug? What's your proposed solution? Maybe your problem is bad wording in your (non-English?) language? You are free to improve the error message in the Translatewiki.
