Description Bawolff (Brian Wolff) 2013-06-15 02:41:23 UTC
Could the Special:Uploads page be renamed Special:MobileUploads or something? Its rather confusing to have two different special page names that differ only by plural.

People do navigate to the special page directly via url, or via search (where search suggestions suggest both), especially on commons where some people don't like upload wizard and manually go to Special:Upload. So having two such similar names could legitimately cause confusion. (At this point though we'd still probably want an alias, but at least we could have different canonical names)

Generally we try to avoid the Mobile prefix if we can. Ideally we look to create pages that work on both desktop and mobile. In this case there was nothing that did the same thing and Uploads was the correct word to describe it.

I agree though this is confusing but I'm not sure how to fix it other than disable the desktop version of the page which seems a bit extreme. A better long term approach might be to look to merge the two pages into one super uploads page...
Comment 2 Bawolff (Brian Wolff) 2013-06-17 00:02:08 UTC
I would argue that in that case it shouldn't be in the MobileFrontend extension but in core. OTOH I don't really think this would be a good feature for core in its current iteration. I'm also doubtful this is actually an attempt at making a "pages that work on both desktop and mobile", (You know, due to how it explodes if used on the desktop...)

However, there's 255 bytes worth of space to play with, and many words in the english language. Even if we don't want to use the word mobile we've got:

Special:AltUploadFormThatShowsRecentUploads
Special:YetAnotherUploadForm
Special:QuickUpload
Special:DonateImages (Wasn't that what it used to be called? Nothing wrong with that name)
Special:UploadMedia (Kind of close, but at least not mistakable)
etc

Note, the name of the special page does not have to be the name in the <title> element, or the top header of the page. It really doesn't have to be a perfect name, provided its not using the name already taken.

Let's just disable it on desktop mode.
Seems silly to make the name more difficult to write and less memorable on mobile.
Comment 5 Jon 2013-06-18 00:36:26 UTC
It will only show in mobile mode now. 404 on desktop.
