pa.wikipedia main page with fault markings

In hardware Apple IPad with operating system iOS version 6.1.3 on Panjabi wikipedia refer URL http://pa.wikipedia.org matra siharis (vowel with sound short I ) is displayed one character ahead ,thus appearing attached to next character instead where it should have been when viewed in Lohit font selected on universal language selector tool.in system font selection which is Raavi appearance is okay at proper place.default font is lohit.
Steps to view fault are
1. Go to URL http://pa.wikipedia.org and see main page itself.
Fault is on all pages.

Guglani: Is this a duplicate of bug 40473?
Comment 2 Kartik Mistry 2013-06-24 05:23:24 UTC
Confirmed. Tested on http://crossbrowsertesting.com with iPad 2 (iOS 5.0, 5.1) and ipad3 (iOS 6.0).

Oops! forgot to mention that, Since, this works fine on my system (Linux: Firefox, Chrome). It looks bug in iOS browser's rendering.

In reply to comment 1:
No, it is not duplicate.40473 is about overlapping problem of digit nine on windows systems, this 50032 is about display of short vowel I in safari browser and iOS operating system on mobile devices like iPad , iPod .other android based tablet pc's may also confirm about this.
Comment 5 Guglani 2013-06-24 07:39:30 UTC
The same problem occurs for Hindi wikipedia also. So problem is nt only with lohit Panjabi but lohit devnagri as well.
Comment 6 Andre Klapper 2013-06-24 11:42:26 UTC
Thanks for clarifying!

Marked upstream.
Comment 8 Siebrand Mazeland 2013-06-25 11:42:31 UTC
Have to mark this as low, as we cannot influence resolution directly. If there is another Language Summit where Wikimedia and Red Hat are participating, we will take this up with Praveen Satpute.

Same Siharis(short I ) problem in lohit Marathi

In response to comment 2nd attachment in lohit Marathi , it is likewise in devnagri font.
Comment 13 Pravin Satpute 2013-06-26 07:17:26 UTC
In image attachment 12640 [details] check "Select font for हिन्दी" in this line "Cons Na" and "Halant" does not forming "Half Na"

This is not font problem. Browser does not support Open type fonts. Due to it complex conjuncts are not forming and reordering of first "I" matra not working properly.

Don't know present state but i think Safari does not support Open Type fonts.

1.But Raavi is open type Gurmukhi font , when we select system font then Raavi font gets selected and it is well supported on safari browser and display appears alright for all Panjabi in Gurmukhi script.
2.Problem of siharis appears with lohit fonts in google chrome browser as well, but it does not appear in system fonts.
(Reply to comment 8 by Siebrand assigning low priority )
Temporarily to solve problem of new users , system font should be made default font by wikimedia foundation in http://pa.wikipedia.org , so that new users and / or first time users may not have to use gear tool for language and font selection to have correct display of digit nine and correct display of siharis created by lohit font on windows PC system and safari/chrome browser apple systems respectively, otherwise high priority should be assigned to solve these lohit font problems.

Are you sure Raavi is open type? most of the apple local fonts have AAT support (Apply Advance typography) that is why they work properly.

Can you email me Raavi fonts, then i can tell you whether it has OT or AAT support? pravin DOT d DOT s AT gmail DOT com

Please refer to Microsoft site URL http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fonts/family.aspx?FID=254 , it says Raavi is open type font.
About other questions of OT or AAT support you may get expert answers from Microsoft site or experts.

Please verify font installed on hardware Apple IPad with operating system iOS version 6.1.3. has AAT tables or not. and update this bug.

It is possible to have single font both AAT and Open Type support.

Apple devices do not show font files folder and where these are located, at least a common person who is not IT expert cannot locate it.To talk of whether these have AAT tables or not is further a matter of investigation by IT experts.at least I cannot answer this if answer is expected only from me. To the fact that Raavi is open Type font I have already replied and given its source in Microsoft URL at comment 17.Experts may further correspond with APPLE or MICROSOFT to get required information about Gurmukhi UNICODE FONTS instlled on APPLE DEVICES or anyone knowledgable about systems on APPLE devices may reply to questions raised above.

What I am seeking is support from everyone in comment no 14 that till problems of lohit font namely problem with display of nine on window systems and problem of siharis on APPLE DEVICES are solved, system font should be made default font , keeping others in option to be selected at punjabi wiki by WMF like being done in Hindi and Marathi wiki and also assigning a priority to this action rather than keeping low priority for this reported bug.

Hi Karthik,

Can you help here to verify two test cases

1. Installing Firefox on iPas and checking whether this works?

2. Checking whether Raavi fonts giving expected results on iPad2? i.e. Opening any text editor and applying Raavi fonts and checking whether this reported bug is reproducible?

Or someone else may be.
Comment 21 Kartik Mistry 2013-07-04 08:34:59 UTC
I don't have iPad handy at moment. But, I'll ask around and see what we can do best as quickly as possible.

Thanks.

Is it even possible to run Firefox on iOS devices? I just checked the appstore, and didn't find one. There is a Google Chrome browser that can be installed, but not Firefox.

Not sure how to do this. http://iosfonts.com/ lists the fonts available on iOS 6.x. Raavi is not in that.

https://sites.google.com/site/totalfontgeek/installing-new-fonts/ios describes that one needs to jump through a lot of hoops to add fonts to an iOS device, including jailbreaking it. Is this what is requested?

I use Punjabi KBS editor which is an application available from Apple Store , and I suppose it uses Raavi font for inputting punjabi Gurmukhi text because I often write with this on IPad and it does not give any errors with Siharis when text is copied from it and posted on pa.wikipedia site , but viewed in system font only. Otherwise also with this application installed when I view pa.wikipedia.org site in system font option of ULS , NO ERRORS ARE THERE in punjabi Gurmukhi text. Application is given in this URL PunjabiKeyboards by eqqon
https://itunes.apple.com/in/app/punjabikeyboards/id549678055?mt=8 this does not require any jail break to install fonts included in it on IPad

That's great to know; developers can add fonts as part of applications, but as far as I know, those fonts will not be able to leave the scope of that application. The app is free, so if we get some sample text that needs to be copied into that app so we can get a rendering baseline by making a screenshot of that, I guess we fulfilled the requested input :).
Comment 27 Pravin Satpute 2013-07-04 12:18:22 UTC
While summarizing:

1. From images seen from bug report i am strongly thinking that Open type fonts are not supported on iOS. and that is why it is giving wrong rendering.

2. Bug reporter says Raavi is an open type font which is working fine on iOS.

I am expecting help from WMF is too confirm whether Web Open Type fonts works on iOS or not.

Option 1. In your testing environment add Raavi fonts as a web fonts and test on iOS. if it shows improved results than Lohit. (Please note Raavi is not under any opensource license.)

I hope so with that we can come to some conclusion on this bug.
