Compare the references section of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Slight_at_the_Opera in read and edit mode.

I can't reproduce this using the example above now, even looking at the version that was live when the comment was left. I see four references in both read and edit modes.

This was fixed in the re-working of references last week; marking as fixed.

Reopening; see bug 52371 for an example of this still happening.
