Due to a VE bug all references in http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Glenn_Greenwald&diff=561437483&oldid=561434741 were fully serialized rather than selectively serialized. This showed some issue where <ref/> was converted to <ref></ref>. 

Not super-urgent as this will only affect modified refs once VE is fixed, but still worth improving.

I couldn't replicate this and with all the recent bug fixes in VE and Parsoid, this one may have been a result of a bug either in VE or old HTML being served up from a buggier Parsoid output.

So, marking this resolved for now.
