Description David Abián 2013-06-26 21:24:00 UTC
In logs, user contributions and history pages in es.wiki, [[MediaWiki:May_long]] is displayed instead of the short version, [[MediaWiki:May]]. Other months do not display the long name.

Example: https://es.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Windows_Phone_8&action=history

Thanks for taking the time to report this!

This seems to be intentional (shortening a 4 letter word to three letters might be a bit weird), and the translation can be found here:

https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special:Translate&group=core&language=es&filter=translated&action=translate

Feel free to discuss with the Spanish translation team (see https://translatewiki.net/ for contact information) whether this makes sense or not, but the software developers in this bugtracker won't be able to judge which abbreviations make sense for which language on this world, so I'm closing this ticket here. :)

Thank you for your help.

However, are you sure there is not something wrong, apart from that? Please look at this qqx view: https://toolserver.org/~invadinado/eswiki-qqx-short-long-month-names.png.
Comment 3 Andre Klapper 2013-06-27 12:07:04 UTC
Interesting. The screenshot says "(may_long)".

I don't know why https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Especial:Preferencias#mw-prefsection-datetime does not offer me to change the date format (while e.g. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spezial:Einstellungen#mw-prefsection-datetime does).
The format seems to really be based on the settings and translations for the specific language in which you display the interface, e.g. in Czech on https://es.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Windows_Phone_8&action=history&uselang=cs you get the usual (Czech) "DD. M. YYYY" format, or https://es.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Windows_Phone_8&action=history&uselang=co shows the long month names for all months.

So I still think that this is a setting for the Spanish language specifically, but would be great to ask on https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Caf%C3%A9 (or a better Spanish place).

This is controlled by $datePreferences in MessagesXx.php files for each language. Spanish has $datePreferences = false.

While this is probably a localization issue, fixing it will require modifying the source code (this isn't managed via translatewiki.net or otherwise), so I'm reopening this for now.
Comment 5 Bartosz Dziewoński 2013-06-27 12:36:20 UTC
Actually, no! It's just a translation misunderstanding, it seems.

[[mediawiki:may]] is supposed to be the abbreviated version, like [[mediawiki:jan]] or [[mediawiki:jul]].

[[mediawiki:may_long]] is supposed to be the normal, full-word version, like [[mediawiki:january]] or [[mediawiki:june]].

If these are inconsistent in Spanish, the translation has to be fixed. If the wrong group is being used for dates, then that's a bug and I'll happily fix it (it should be pretty simple).

Marking INVALID for now. Please reopen if this is a real bug (see above) :)

Oh, you have reason, Bartosz. My apologies.
