I tried the differing paragraphs in http://parsoid.wmflabs.org/_rtform/, where they round-trip fine.

The fact that they were fully serialized points towards RT issues on the VE side too. The particular nesting of elements which are treated as annotations in the VE might be the issue here.

Let us hope that it does not affect arguments of {{math}} and similar templates.

This is because the adjacent italic annotations are being merged, same bug as 49873
