Description Juan de Vojníkov 2013-07-10 07:01:01 UTC
I dont know wheter this is a bug on Wikimedia side or on my side, but recently at Wikimedia projects I get sometimes following statment when browsing:

"Při hledání došlo k chybě: Čas pro HTTP požadavek vypršel."

It sais that during search the bug was detected: HTTP request timeout.

Hi Juan,
unfortunately this report is not very useful because it does not describe the problem well. If you have time and can still reproduce the problem, please read https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/How_to_report_a_bug and add a more useful description to this report by providing exact steps to reproduce (for example "at Wikimedia projects" is too vague).
Comment 2 Juan de Vojníkov 2013-07-11 14:44:07 UTC
Well I encounter this problem at cs.wp. But well, next time it happens, Ill describe it step by step.
Comment 3 Juan de Vojníkov 2013-07-15 09:08:53 UTC
So, now I have ancounter it again. Using FF 22.0 at cs.wp I type to search box "ethernit" and hit ENTER. Within a few seconds I end up at Special:Search with red error message "Při hledání došlo k chybě: Čas pro HTTP požadavek vypršel."
Comment 4 Juan de Vojníkov 2013-08-05 05:50:18 UTC
Another example. At Wikimedia Commons, I typed to search window nonexistent category "category:AC-83" and pressed enter. After some time same page and same error message as previously stated.

Technical details:
*Br: FF 22.0
*Page got in: 10.162 secs.
*Connection: 2/16 Mbit, real at time 1.6/19.7, higher latency
*tracert: request time out at IP between 84.233.190.1 and 91.198.174.224
*status.wikimedia.org: service disruption at Inciga, performence level 12 for Czech Republic
Comment 5 Andre Klapper 2013-08-06 12:25:45 UTC
Tried the same and got "There are no pages or files in this category.", plus did not take 10 seconds.

> *tracert: request time out at IP between 84.233.190.1 and 91.198.174.224

Full output could be helpful.

Here's another URL which has consistently resulted in the error:
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ASearch&profile=help&search=npov+noticeboard&fulltext=Search
Comment 8 Juan de Vojníkov 2014-03-21 23:21:52 UTC
I have tested the previous two URLs and its not happening to me. But could developers determine if this would be a problem on the Wikimedia site or on our site?

What do you mean by full output?

I don't think that'd be helpful. Report is HTTP timeout on the WMF side (From the mediawiki servers -> the search servers), user's tracert probably won't say anything useful.

Message in question is 'search-error'

That'd be an issue in lsearchd, which is being replaced as quickly as it can be. lsearchd is end of life'd at WMF, so this bug is a WONTFIX I'm afraid (since it's fixed by default with the new search)

You can avoid this problem *right now* by opting in to the new search via your beta features.
