Description Subhashish Panigrahi 2013-07-15 16:10:51 UTC
ULS currently has a layout ଫୋନେଟିକ (Phonetic in Odia) which was neither requested or supported by the Odia Wikimedia community. Rather community worked for a phonetic tool "Lekhani" which need to be displayed as "ଫୋନେଟିକ". So, please replace "ଫୋନେଟିକ" layout from the backend and keep only Lekhani. Lekhani's display name should be: ଫୋନେଟିକ
and description should be "Odia Phonetic layout"

There is a gap in between the letters, the correct one would be:
ଟ୍ରାନ୍‌ସଲିଟରେସନ

Is there a need for Inscript2 (ଇନସ୍କ୍ରିପ୍ଟ2)? none from the community has asked
for it.

Please keep the layouts in this format:

ଫୋନେଟିକ (Lekhani should be used only in backend, for the users it should be ଫୋନେଟିକ (Phonetic))
ଟ୍ରାନ୍‌ସଲିଟରେସନ (Transliteration)
ଇନସ୍କ୍ରିପ୍ଟ (Inscript)
ଇନସ୍କ୍ରିପ୍ଟ2 (Inscript2)

Hi Subhashish,
thanks for the note and telling us about the community's feelings.
The Language Engineering team will probably soon elaborate here on the reasoning behind some of the decisions made, so that we can all better understand and find a good solution for the community.

Hi Subhashish,

The Oriya Phonetic layout (i.e. the layout provided by the or-phonetic.js file) is part of the m17n library. This library is heavily used to source the input methods that are provided through the mainstream Linux distributions. This input method as well as Inscript2 has been included in the jQuery.ime library to enrich the open source input method collection that are already available and in use. I'll request you to reconsider the decision of 'removing' the or-phonetic layout completely. We can perhaps ensure that the nomenclature is significantly prominent to distinguish it from the Lekhani layout.

Inscript2 or Enhanced Inscript is the next edition of Inscript and will replace the older Inscript. A final confirmation is waiting on the Government of India. Since it addresses the shortcomings of the original Inscript, as a common practice it is already being shipped out in major mainstream Linux Distributions. The older Inscript still remains in the collection to handle any regression.

What do you think?

Dear Runa,

Thanks for writing back. I do understand the importance of the "Oriya Phonetic layout" as it is provided along with the mainstream Linux distributions. But the community worked on creating Lekhani based on the this layout. Lekhani is a slightly modified form of this layout and done by the community. So, it doesn't make any sense to keep two similar layouts. May be the name "Lekhani" could be used only in backend and would be displayed as "Phonetic" in every other place.

If Inscript2 is replacing Inscript then it is alright to have it for now.

Recently a new layout has been also proposed and so many layouts would simply confuse new editors. That's the only worry and reason of requesting for this.

Thanks for the explanation. From what I understand the Odia Phonetic (or-phonetic.mim and or-phonetic.js) is different from the Odia Lekhani in terms of the former being mapped to single keys and the latter being mapped to multiple keys. Is there also any documentation/notes/discussions related to the development of Odia Lekhani that I could also read through? This is just to be super-clear that from our side we will not be breaking anything for too many users.

Thanks for your patience.

From http://or.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%AC%89%E0%AC%87%E0%AC%95%E0%AC%BF%E0%AC%AA%E0%AC%BF%E0%AC%A1%E0%AC%BC%E0%AC%BF%E0%AC%86:Lekhani: Lekhani is a [..] standard keyboard layout for Narayam in Odia language. It is based on the "Oriya phonetic typing on Ubuntu" and "Oriya - QUERTY" on Mac as they both follow one common typing standard. Lekhani is a proposed name for this typing scheme on Wikipedia.

On that basis alone, I think we should not remove the m17n phonetic input method for Oriya.
Removing it would inconvenience people familiar with the Ubuntu and OSX input methods. I will be all for removing or updating it, once the changes made in Lekhani are adopted in said input methods.
