Description Rainer Rillke @commons.wikimedia 2013-07-16 20:42:57 UTC
Original bug tilte:
Upload summary should be in site language not in user language

Currently we get uploads with upload summary like:
* Contributed image from Special:Uploads
* Special:Uploads에서 그림을 기여함
* Lagt til bilde for bruk på siden

The uploads in question carry the following template:
{{Uploaded from Mobile|platform=Web|version=}}
Comment 1 Yuvi Panda 2013-07-16 20:55:24 UTC
Uploads carrying that particular template are from mobile web, so changing component appropriately.
Comment 2 Yuvi Panda 2013-07-16 20:56:04 UTC
See bug 46728 for similar bug for the Apps.

Thanks for changing. That's why I included this template.

This is tricky in that the software is written in a generic way so that 3rd parties can upload to their current wiki in the language their current wiki uses.

So in theory - French Wikipedia could stop using Commons and upload photos directly to French Wikipedia and would want edit summaries in French.

I'm not sure yet of an elegant way to do this apart from store the edit summary in a config file or hardcode to the edit summary to English. Neither of them is ideal.

I'm not sure how this can be fixed elegantly in mobile web.

If you are uploading from French Wikipedia to Commons it's perfectly reason that your edit summary is written in your own language.

A matter of the point of view.
From the point of view of a Wikimedia Commons administrator this is ... unfortunate. Additionally I do believe that the upload summary should be something more useful, describing the file content.

If the upload summary described the content would this not also be in the language of the user? If that is indeed preferred - we could potentially copy across the summary given by the user instead (although I fear that might be worse).

Note bug 50265 also rethinks the upload summary. Maybe if we could come at this from a different perspective we could come up with a more useful edit summary where translation is less of an issue.

What is the problem here that is being caused - does having the summary in different languages stop filtering in a certain way?

No, it's just senseless when you look at it on the file listings like [[Special:ListFiles]] and even more worse for those who cannot access deleted material because the log will not cite anything about the content except the title. I am thinking of our patrollers. Resolving Bug 50265 would be great.

J'espère que vous avez un joyeux Noël und alles Gute im neuen Jahr.

Okay I think we are getting somewhere to understanding what the core problem is. I think there is a slightly different bug here - so I've raised a new one summarising this: bug 58983
