Description Sage Ross 2013-07-17 16:40:58 UTC
See the VE behaviour for the followed old revision:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Shoppes_at_Northway&oldid=564671392&veaction=edit

In the external links section, I added {{commonscat}} using the VE. I could not move the template once placed, and it ended up on the same line as the external link. So that line has this wikitext:

*[http://www.shoppesatnorthway.com The Shoppes at Northway]{{commonscat}}

If I click the link, both

VE does not parse this the same way as the actual page looks, and VE presents it as a Translusion, with components [] Content and Commonscat. VE also shows the template showing up properly on the right side, but in normal view mode the template formatting is broken when it is on the same line as the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Shoppes_at_Northway&oldid=564671392

As for the first issue (transclusion ending up on the same line as the external link), I am going to put it down as user error (and/or unclear VE UI). I experimented with it right now, and You could have moved the template to a next line by adding a line break before the transclusion and using the unindent button to remove the list item from the transclusion, and the serialization is as desired.

As for the second issue, it is unavoidable since the transclusion adds category links that end up outside the list. So, for proper serialization, the list and those categories get encapsulated as a single unit.

So marking this as works for me. Please reopen if necessary with additional clarification.
