Description kipod 2013-07-21 21:43:54 UTC
When you type "[[" in visual editor, there is a "wiki markup text" popu (nice touch - Thanks, devs).

However, this warning popup shows at top of page, so it's not visible when the page is scrolled even a few lines.

VE toolbar floats at the top of the browser's page even when we edit at the middle of the article. the warning popu should do the same.

REPRODUCTION INSTRUCTIONS
0) open [[en:The Rolling Stones]]
1) select one of the sections from the TOC
2) Click "Edit"
3) wait, wait, wait, wait...
4) close the edit notice
5) type "[["

EXPECTED
1) during the wait (3 above) there is a nice image asking you to wait: this image is expected to be visible

2) when the "edit notice" shows up, you expect some clear way to close it.

3) when typing "[[", you expect the "wikitext warning" popup to show up

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPEN

1) the "please wait" image appears, but unfortunately it's outside the screen, so you do not know why the page appears milky, and have no indication that this would eventually end.

2) depending on your luck, clicking on various parts of the page *will* close the edit notice (if you're lucky), or will take you to [[en:Template:Editnotices/Page/The Rolling Stones]] (i.e., another page from the one you are trying to edit) if you're unlucky.

3) the warning popup appears, but it's at the top of the page, so unless you are editing the very first part of the page, you do not see it.

COMMENTS:
1) VE is clever enough to have its toolbar visible even when scrolling down, using "position:fixed". same should be done for the "please wait" image and for the warning popup(s).

2) the "1 notice" and the warning triangle on the toolbar should indicate that they are the gate to hiding the notice: e.g., change the "1 Notice" text to "Hide notice" when the notice is visible.

3) it seems that the wikitext notice is not yet translated to all languages.

peace.

so here is what i mean: if you click on the page outside the "edit notice", nothing happens.
if you click on the edit notice itself, then it depends:
some parts of the edit notice are links (including the images), and will take you elsewhere. there is no indication, because the edit notice as a whole has "cursor: pointer;" css attribute, so the mouse pointer looks the same everywhere on the edit notice. clicking somewhere which is not a link will close the notice, and clicking somewhere which *is* a link will take you elsewhere. again, there is little indication - e.g., moving the mouse into and out of images does not give any visible sign.
clicking on the little "page notice" link *inside* the notice takes you elsewhere, while clicking on the "1 notice" on the toolbar closes the notice.
very confusing.

(btw: the notice itself seems to be anchored to the toolbar rather than to the page, which is exactly what's needed for the "please wait" image and for the wikitext popup).

peace.

Comment 3 kipod 2013-07-22 15:13:48 UTC
Original bug talked about 3 (somewhat unrelated) things.

The first one turned out to be duplicate of bug 50870, and not specific to VE (i think this is why i did not find it).

However, the 2nd one *is* specific to VE, and i do not think bug 50870 covers it.

so i changed the synopsis of this bug to indicate the 2nd problem, and i'm reopening it.

i know that opening a single ticket for 3 different issues is not a good idea, and i apologize for doing something i know is wrong.

(it's a bit confusing - "1st" and "2nd", appear as "2" and "1" in original ticket - i call "2" in comment #0 "first" because this was the synopsis of original ticket).

peace.

As long as you don't do it again, no need to apologise. :-)

(is https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50206 a dupe?)
Comment 6 Bartosz Dziewoński 2013-09-17 16:51:08 UTC
Sounds like the same thing.

The other bug is older and the discussion on this one is mostly related to bug 50870, so I'll mark this one as a dupe of that one.
