becomes

<ref>"La plus grande bibliothèque yiddish d'Europe", in: '"Libération"'', 24/25. Juni 1995''</ref>

IMO what it's doing is pretty sane, as that is how it renders, and the page should be fixed as these cases appear on recentchanges. The resulting diff can be quite difficult to diagnose. However if it is happening frequently maybe build a list of cases to be reviewed by the community and fixed properly, or mass update with a bot to be reviewed and fix.

The /_rt/ mode disables the selective serialization technique used in production, which normally avoids this issue for unmodified content.

We do have information about auto-inserted start/end tags that we could expose to bots or users. We have bug 46705 for this. I added a note there about linting for auto-inserted start/end tags too.

I'm closing this bug as a duplicate for now. Please reopen if you believe that this is not covered properly by 46705.
