If JSON output is requested and the "callback" parameter is given, wrap the result in a function call, according to the JSONp spec.

This can be done via the API. What is the advantage of doing this here too?

Agreed, I suggest WONTFIXing this. (I even don't see why Special:EntityData should exist)
