Description SJ 2013-07-28 01:57:13 UTC
The mobile interface for wikipedia currently doesn't offer a link to the Talk/non-Talk page. Nor does it offer a clear link to the History page.

Request: add a thin set of tabs at the top of the page, as on the non-mobile interface. Include at least "Article/Project" "Talk".

Either offer a "History" tab (which would take you to the non-mobile interface, as currently), or move up the "last edited X days ago" line to be a subtitle, just below the title. If the latter, add the text "(see page history)" to make it clear that clicking on that text will display the history page.

This will make editing and interacting with the site via mobile much more rewarding. Thanks!

Is this a MobileFrontend thing? If so it should be moved to that component. CCing some mobile people
Comment 2 Jon 2013-07-28 10:09:15 UTC
Talk is being worked on in beta at the moment (enable the beta version of the site in Settings to see it). I wouldn't say it's a bug as such - we just want to optimise the experience for mobile.

There is a link to the history link - the last modified link at the bottom.
The desktop version of the history page however is a big mess and needs optimising for mobile. We know this we just haven't had the bandwidth so far to focus on this...
Comment 3 Jon 2013-12-23 20:47:20 UTC
Both of these features are being worked on as part of the MobileFrontend core teams development efforts (slowly) so marking as ASSIGNED
Comment 4 SJ 2014-03-13 03:11:31 UTC
Jon, thank you for these updates. The talk page issue seems like a bug waiting on feature development. The bug is that one currently has to url-hack a long url in order to get to [talk] pages that are necessary to understand or edit what is being read. The feature is an "optimal" experience that matches the elegance of the rest of the mobile experience.

Talk pages currently render quite well on both my devices, without modification.

For history pages, I still hope the "last edited" text at the bottom of each page can be clarified with text such as "(see history)" or "(see recent edits)" so that it is obvious that this is a link to a history of edits.

See also #33909, of which this is largely a duplicate (though this one has more detail and a more favorable status :-)
Comment 6 Jon 2014-03-13 18:14:18 UTC
I personally think it could be acceptable to have a talk page link at the bottom of the page next to the history link for logged in users (so we can avoid caching problems) as an intermediate step for power users like yourself.

If you or someone watching this bug can get someone to make a patch for that, I'll try and push that through - I doubt there will be any big objections. Alas, I'm pretty swamped to do that myself right now...
Comment 7 Jon 2014-04-18 17:23:58 UTC
History is being made available in https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/127195/ so descoping this bug to just be about the talk page link.
Comment 8 Andre Klapper 2014-06-18 09:59:02 UTC
The interwebs says "If you opt into the beta site (visit Settings in the left navigation menu and tap to opt into Beta), you'll also see a talk page feature".

Setting back to NEW, there is now the possibility to link to #/talk, but the talk feature is still in beta and a "working on it", if i'm right :)
Comment 12 Mark Mandel 2014-11-15 17:39:21 UTC
CONTEXT:
I use the mobile site, '''betatest version''', on a Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone (model SCH-I535, Android v. 4.4.2). When I go to my user page via the menu at the top left (bottom option, square smiley-face) I get the small RECENT ACTIVITY page, which has at the bottom a link
'''Visit user page'''
and a button
''[speech balloons icon]'' '''Talk to Thnidu'''
Both of those take me where they say they will. So far, so good.

BUG:
The user page itself also has a speech balloons icon just under the title, along with the pencil and star icons ("edit" and "watchlist"). When I tap that I get

X Talk Add discussion
There are no conversations about this page

which is patently false. If I tap "Read as wiki page" at the bottom, I get

'''User talk:User:Thnidu'''
Return to the user page of "User:Thnidu".
This page doesn't exist. Why not be bold and create it?

Accessing the normal website with my laptop, I find no comparable problem.

ANALYSIS:
Of course, my user talk page is '''User talk:Thnidu'''. Evidently the mobile beta speech balloons icon, when tapped on a user page, ''prefixes'' "User talk:" to the complete name of the user page instead of ''replacing'' "User" with "User talk".
Comment 13 Florian 2014-11-15 18:15:48 UTC
@Mark Mandel: I have no talk button in page-actions (between pencil and watchstar) on your user talk page:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Thnidu?mobileaction=beta
Comment 14 Mark Mandel 2014-11-15 19:53:45 UTC
Please reread my comment more carefully. I didn't say I had a talk button on the talk page itself; that would be rather strange! I have a talk button on the USER PAGE, which evidently generates the misformed target page name "User talk:User:Thnidu", which falsely returns "page doesn't exist".

If I go to the user page of another user who is registered directly on Wikipedia, such as Cirt, I get the same pattern as on my own page: a talk LINK that works, and a talk BUTTON that doesn't, in the same way as I described for my own page.
Comment 15 Florian 2014-11-15 20:41:17 UTC
Sorry, i misunderstood your comment :/

> I didn't say I had a talk button on the talk page itself; that would be rather strange! I have a talk button on the USER PAGE

Ok, i see the problem, thanks for reporting this (this should be a seperate bug, i will create one :)). See 73476

Thanks for doing this properly.

In that regard, see

Comment 17 Jon 2014-11-17 05:46:18 UTC
Thanks Florian for creating a bug for that!
