I assume that I would receive one notification for that edit. Instead I received a notification for each mention of my username. (see screenshot)

This looks like a feature than a bug.  The primary action of 'mention' notification is a link to each section.  Triggering only one would miss the others.  However, Triggering more than one notification in one edit is indeed quite distracting.  I will talk to Fabrice about a better approach on this when he returns from vacation
