Friends, we're making awesome progress adding and revising icons in MediaWiki to enhance usability of the site on desktop and mobile. What we're not doing is a great job of avoiding replicating work. I can think of several instances where we're using very similar but slightly different icons to represent the same concepts. Let's use this bug to track down that wasted duplicate effort, and standardize on one icon for each concept, where we can.
I think gear icon (for settings) is different between various extensions (UniversalLanguageSelector and ArticleFeedbackv5 come to mind, off-hand).
(In reply to comment #1) > I think gear icon (for settings) is different between various extensions > (UniversalLanguageSelector and ArticleFeedbackv5 come to mind, off-hand). Heh, right: this is bug 50843.
Related to this is https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Design_audit which S Page can help with. Part of what will prevent duplicate or divergent icons is a catalog of which icons we use for what, eventually as part of a style guide.
This also needs updating: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Design/Agora_Icon_Set
Adding Pau to cc because I recall he already wrote something about inconsistent icons some time ago. IIRC, Translate and ULS consistently use the Agora icons listed at <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Design/Agora_Icon_Set#Existing_icons> while other extensions or icons are quite messy.
Just wanted to add the Watchlist icon to this list of icon consistency issues.
