Description sju-w 2013-10-13 18:58:31 UTC
The current ways how to create a new article (through click on the red link or through unsuccessful search) are not just refined and intuitive.

Wikipedia web interface need a standard direct link "Create a new article" in the left menu (similar as "Upload file" link or as "Create a new item" on Wikidata). The primary function of the link should be simply open the new article for edit. Its function can be improved subsequently (detection of similar articles, pre-filled patterns for frequent types of articles - similarly to Upload Wizard - etc.). Commons can have a link "Create a gallery" instead.

Why wouldn't you search for the existence of the article first, to find out whether a new article is needed at all?

Of course, I know and use both current ways (mentioned above) how to create an article. However, when an user just scoured and rummaged the project through and through and thereafter is starting to create new articles, why he should be forced to click "search" again instead "create a new article"? It's similar to the absurd logic of the old Windows that an user have to click "Start" when he want turn the comp off. The Bugzilla should help to make the software better, not to defend obvious faults and deficiencies.

Btw. here at Bugzilla also exists a link "Enter a new bug" and the user is not forced to ramble through search link when he just want enter a new bug.

This can already be achieved by adding something like

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_creation/Wizard

on the sidebar

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Sidebar

The Wizard can use InputBox to obtain the desired page name
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Creating_pages_with_preloaded_text

That allows page creation in three steps
1. click on sidebar, which takes the clicker to the wizard
2. enter name of new page in input box
3. enter text and save

Each wiki community can already do that, which is why I am marking this as wontfix.

The only part of the enhancement request that is missing is software that allows super quick new page creation by merging step 2 & 3 together, like

https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:NewItem

This is easy to do for Wikidata, with only name = value.

I cant see any extension which can do this on Wikipedia.
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Category:Page_creation_extensions

Software to do that could also be created for Wikipedia, but most people would want a new page feature on Wikipedia to have more features (including a Visual Editor..).

A redesign of the article creation process is happening on Mediawiki.org
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Article_creation_workflow
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Article_Creation_Workflow/Landing_System/Archive_1

If a Wikipedia community wants a simple form like the wikidata Special:NewItem , they should hold a vote and then reopen this bug if there is consensus that the simple form is desirable.
