The proxy actually seems fine, and has been running without interruption (at least, I see no 'blank spots' in the logs since the NFS migration (with 200s in basically every minute).

I'm guessing that the issue is with the ganglia instrumentation.

There appears to be an intermittent problem, but that problem only affects http:// and not https://

Problem located and squished; it turns out that one of the tools was accidentally causing a DDOS by triggering flood protection.  Settings have been tweaked to be more forgiving.  :-)
