If I click "reply", on any nested comment, it displays the top-level commenter in the auto-hint for "Reply to EditorFoo". 

Eg. See screenshot, where I've clicked on the "Reply" button for User:HELLO, but the auto-hint is saying "Reply to Legoktm" (the thread-parent).

Aha; so, it suggests (in indent2) replying to thread-parent rather than indent1-parent?

The WMF core features team tracks this bug on Mingle card https://mingle.corp.wikimedia.org/projects/flow/cards/364, but people from the community are welcome to contribute here and in Gerrit.
