right now there's a little user icon, followed with "by so and so", I think this should be changed to "[user icon] uploaded by so and so", as "by" by itself implies authorship (imo)

I think this is a bug related to cross-domain requests not returning something useful, and me passing in something wonky to the GENDER call as a result. I'll look at this.

I'm not seeing this in prod or on our alpha instance - is it still an issue anywhere?

The gender call still returns nothingness when not on a WMF wiki (this is probably not fixable), but MediaViewer handles it just fine. Closing as fixed.
