Mobile applications are often used in scenarios with limited or shaky bandwidth. Smaller download sizes for content will directly result in pages being loaded much faster. WebP is a file format for lossy image compression developed by Google that offers smaller file sizes compared to JPEG (various studies come to different conclusions, gmaxwell/mozilla did not come to this conclusion) Android devices running version 4 upwards will be able to display WebP via its media framework.
