How does this differ from the component "User preferences"?

Yeah... I'm not sure this bug should remain open.

Don't see a real difference to open tickets in this Bugzilla component with severity enhancement.

In my mind, adding a user preference is a last resort. We know empirically that most users never change their preferences and there's a very real cost in terms of wasting human time requiring users to select/modify their preferences and in terms of increasing code complexity, which leads to wasting human time developing more advanced code. The answer is to have sane defaults and only add a user preference when it's absolutely necessary.

I feel similarly about global configuration variables in MediaWiki.

Creating tracking tickets takes a bit of practice and patience. I love the recent boldness, but do try to realize that it resulted in _dozens_ of e-mails to many people and ultimately a few of the bugs have been speedily closed. A bit of practice and patience. :-)
