Contributions has a "newbie" concept.
If extensions want to hook into contributions, they should make similar functionality; thus basically copying/repeating what is already done in core.

We should update contributions in core and find a way to expose that to extensions.

The WMF core features team tracks this bug on Mingle card https://mingle.corp.wikimedia.org/projects/flow/cards/629, but people from the community are welcome to contribute here and in Gerrit.

That's the "Show contributions of new accounts only" options - in code called newbies.
