Gryllida suggests that VisualEditor have colorful icons.  Alternatively, the existing monochrome icons could be kept, but editors could be given the option of choosing a Microsoft-style "theme" to change the appearance of the icons.  

In addition to being fun, it is possible that other icon styles would improve accessibility for some users.
