Recently npm install won't work any more, apparently because node/npm is too old. Upgrading nodejs to 0.10.24 (along with new npm) fixes the issue, and is also what we are using in general. We have a 0.10 backport for Ubuntu in the WMF repos that we are currently testing, and should be the preferred solution. The other alternative is the PPA described in https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:GWicke/Notes/Storage/Cassandra_testing#Rashomon_setup.

has this been solved? I see that vagrant still references '0.8.2-1chl1~precise1'.

Ubuntu 14.04 includes nodejs v0.10.25 as the default version.
