when leaving comment on wikipedia, 5 tildes evoked an error message, implying that the comment was unsigned. 4 tildes behaves as expected

Please provide exact steps to reproduce (plus *which* Wikipedia as there are many languages out there). Also see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/How_to_report_a_bug

5 tildes only give the timestamp which is not enough in the most places as signature. The same for ~~~ which gives the user name part only.

I don't see any bug here (yet) but expected behavior so far...
