Description osweetman 2014-02-13 04:58:05 UTC
I'm really surprised this hasn't been reported yet. The new search function is nearly unusable on my phone. It doesn't work correctly with the keyboard (the keyboard will close after the first letter is input) and it's much slower than the previous version of search. This is on Android 2.3.3 and it displays this behavior with the stock keyboard. I don't see what needed to be improved over the old version - is there really any value to showing thumbnail pictures? Please fix this issue or better yet go back to the old version.

Hi osweetman,
unfortunately this report is not very useful because it does not describe the problem well. If you have time and can still reproduce the problem, please read https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/How_to_report_a_bug and add a more useful description to this report by providing *exact* steps to reproduce that somebody else could try to follow.

It looks like the keyboard issue has been fixed. There's just a minor bug still in that the keyboard (default Android) will not open unless I click on the search box a second time.

These are the steps:

1. Go to the mobile site (m.wiki...)
2. Click on "Search Wikipedia"
3. Keyboard won't open unless I click on the search box a second time.

And I still think the thumbnail pictures are a pointless waste of resources. Unless there are people who don't understand written language and need the pictures instead? I don't get it.

What are the exact steps? There are several hundreds of Wikipedias.

Different issue and off-topic for this ticket. See https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Mobile for providing feedback.

I can replicate this on English Wikipedia but not MediaWiki.org or latest master. As a result I'm inclined to believe this has been fixed and should be fixed on English Wikipedia shortly. Please reopen if you are still seeing this problem in a week.
