Description Matthew Flaschen 2014-02-21 18:04:51 UTC
logstash (https://logstash.wikimedia.org) reveals that on the WMF cluster, there are some "GettingStarted requires CentralAuth to be installed" on wikis which definitely have CentralAuth installed.

It doesn't *seem* common (there are only 146), but I could be mistaken (e.g. it rotates faster than I thought), or it could be a new issue.

A quick test revealed that it redirected back as expected, so it's not a universal issue.

This is concerning even if the total errors is quite small.

Could this be related to CentralAuth failures? Users have given us feedback that they're sometimes getting errors after signup like "The provided authentication token is either expired or invalid.". I've also not too rarely seen errors where the redirect through login.wikimedia.org failed and I was stuck there.

Okay, it turns out that figure is only in the last hour. In the last month, there are 40686.

Yeah that's kind of a lot. :(

So inspecting this on logstash more (https://logstash.wikimedia.org/#dashboard/temp/i1b-zelaTqOZKhEv0m_W9w) I can see that we're getting two to three thousands of these errors every day now, for grand total of 59,820 in the last 30 days.

Will removing the CentralAuth dependency in bug 65619 cause this to fix itself?
Comment 5 Matthew Flaschen 2014-06-09 21:26:01 UTC
Yes, it should. It will change how it relates to CentralAuth, and that warning (which was meant to be a sanity check to make sure CentralAuth is enabled) will no longer be necessary.
