Steps to reproduce:

1.Open a page with wikitext editor
2.Insert an empty reference for example: empty reference<ref />
3.Save the page
4.Now open the page with VE

Observed Result:
It does not let you edit the empty reference you just added and shows an error "This reference is defined in a template or other generated block and for now can only be edited in source mode"
