Should be more like, "<cohort name> - <main characteristic> - <date range> - <time resolution>.csv".

Right.  Currently it's <metric name> - <cohort name> and the other parameters you mentioned are in the CSV.  The changes currently on metrics-staging.wmflabs show a few more useful parameters in the CSV itself, but I think this would be a useful enhancement anyway.
