I think it would be a great enhancement to allow to upload and image via VE. Do it via Wikimedia Commons is quite confusing for the newbies. Sudenly you are redirected to the new environment.

So why not to do this on the background and stay on the page, which the user is edditing, ask him a few questions to fill metadata and then insert the image on the possition of a cursor.
