Per community consensus above, please enable and configure $wgBabelCategoryNames array variable from [[mw:Extension:Babel]] onto Beta Wikiversity.

Example of wanted change (I reversed diff and oldid to show categories produced by Babel template instead of Babel magic word):

It seems like previous templates used on that wiki also allowed categories like "Category:User xx-0".

So probably line 11325 has to be changed from "'0' => false," to "'0' => 'User %code%-0',".
