Bad things happened here:

The editor made changes to one paragraph.  About 1400 spaces were added to over 100 templates, so that this:

{{sfn|Pendle|2005|pp=201, 304}}

became this:

{{sfn|Pendle|2005|pp = 201, 304}}.  

In a quick review, only {{sfn}} and {{snfm}} templates were adjusted, and they were only changed if they contained an equals sign (=).

Sounds like a Parsoid bug. There was no check tag on the revision, so it's very unlikely VE had anything to do with it.

I tried to reproduce this by editing the version right before this diff, but I couldn't reproduce. A new version of Parsoid was deployed just 30 minutes prior, though, so maybe that fixed it.
