The TemplateHandler still wraps leading string tokens into spans (see https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/133506/7/lib/ext.core.TemplateHandler.js around line 662). 

It might be possible to do away with this after the last round of DOM template wrapping tweaks. Lets test this and see if we can make it work with little effort.
