The "W" menu is currently a mixture of lots of different things: - Login/logout (entire app) - Random article (navigation) - Browsing history (navigation) - Saved pages (navigation) - Save foo for offline reading (page specific) - Search English language wiki (entire app) - Warn if leaving Wikipedia Zero (entire app) - Send feedback (entire app) - History of changes to foo (page specific) - Credits (entire app) I think we should move all the "entire app" things into a separate Settings pane, which is linked from the bottom of the W menu. The page specific things should be next to each other on the list, not apart like they are right now.
This page was just a placeholder :) The new design, which should be implemented in the next week or so, is here: https://trello.com/c/6OUSUp5G/20-3-as-a-user-i-can-have-useful-items-in-the-left-nav-grouped-by-context-so-i-can-find-the-items-i-want-quickly-and-easily
Looks better for the most part. Is the black background in the second step just for the mockup? I hope that isn't intended in the actual design. Where are the "save foo for offline reading" and "history of changes to foo" menu items going?

I hope that isn't intended in the actual design. Apparently it is, given that it's in beta #20. The constant flickering from white to black to white is really annoying and is messing with the rendering of the menu bar, making it look like it's disappearing and then re-appearing. > Where are the "save foo for offline reading" and "history of changes to foo" > menu items going? The save button got punted to the share menu, and history is now tucked behind the "..." :(
Kunal, You make a reasonable point here, We are actually using black backgrounds fairly conservatively. it is meant to clearly distinguish selection areas from content screens.
In the final design which comes out in the next build, Save is punted to the default IOS Share sheet. The Edit History is at the very bottom of the article. See Language and Edit History designs on this card - https://trello.com/c/rwpQuBAF/81-main-navigation-design-for-sprint-31

Is that necessary? Or at the very least, can it not be black<-->white? Looking through a few of the iOS apps I have installed: Facebook uses a grayish back-background (I don't know what the right word is) with white foreground for content, and gray separators with white background in the settings menu Twitter uses a white background throughout with gray separators. Foursquare uses a white background for content has a lighter-black (not as solid black as the Wikipedia app) menu which goes to a white backgrounded settings. Gmail does the same thing as Foursquare. I'd note that both Foursquare and Gmail don't cover the entire screen in black, just part of it, and it's not a solid black, it's a bit lighter. Also they use a menu slider rather than an overlay so it's less sudden. Personally I'd prefer not even having black at all, but a compromise might be to do something like Foursquare/Gmail do. It's been 3 weeks now...have there been any updates? I'm told the app is going to be launched in ~2 weeks.
Me (and rest of android team (and some people sending in feedback)) would like it to be less black as well.
I like the black.
(my comment was for Android, since it doesn't fully overlay the screen) Will open a separate bug.
Agreed - if not overlaying whole screen it does look jarring.
Once bug 66908 is fixed, we can remove page history from the hidden submenu, leaving us with no page specific items in it.
Is this ready to close out with latest updates?
Assuming the total redesign of the menu has resolved this.
Addressed for the short term. thank you for closing.
Yeah sorry, I haven't had much time recently to play with the updated app, so I was holding off on closing it. I took a quick look at it just now and it looks much better :)
