Description Rexford 2014-05-30 19:53:16 UTC
Name of mailing list: african-wikimedians
Purpose: mailing list for African wikimedians
Admins: seanmavley@gmail.com (Nkansah Rexford), ndubaneds@gmail.com ( Dumisani Indubane)
Comment 1 Rexford 2014-05-30 19:54:36 UTC
If available before June 5, it'll be great.
Comment 2 Tomasz W. Kozlowski 2014-05-30 20:21:04 UTC
Please provide a link to a community discussion expressing a need (or wish) of the list. Thanks!
Comment 3 Rexford 2014-06-04 07:29:40 UTC
Unfortunately, discussion of the need for a mailing list has not been discussed in a mailing list community.

It's only a discussion among the organizing team behind the upcoming wikiindaba conference

A thread of the discussions I paste below.

Hi Rexford

I think its a good idea to create a new list and name if "african-wikimedians" as suggested. We will need to keep up the communication channels way beyond Wikiindaba.

Regards

Dumisani Ndubane

Please see messages below. I also agree with asaf that for now I think we can use the mailing list of wikimedia south Africa.

We can also apply for one as per the instructions below

I d suggest the same as asaf, wikimedia za seems just fine. There is quite a number of persons who do not like the complexity of too many lists.

Yes. The way to create a new mailing list on Wikimedia servers is described here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists#Create_a_new_list

If a more immediate solution is sought (and if the list is not expected to be used _after_ the Indaba), you might ask attendees to subscribe to the WikimediaZA list, at least for the duration.

If the list _is_ expected to continue to be used to network between African Wikimedians, perhaps the list should not be named something like Indaba, but just "african-wikimedians" or something like that, so it would more obvious for future people that it's appropriate to subscribe to.

Cheers,

   Asaf

My apologies for leaving this request lying around like this.

@Asaf, can you confirm that there is need for this list?

Thanks,
            Tomasz
Comment 5 Asaf Bartov 2014-06-17 21:51:30 UTC
Thanks, Tomasz. Yes, I think it should be created. The first pan-African wikiconference is about to commence in Johannesburg this weekend, and it is reasonable to expect it would result in heightened regional cooperation. Such cooperation does not have an obvious venue, other than Wikimedia-l, and this proposed list could provide that.

I certainly intend to participate actively, and to follow up on any initiatives and plans hatched at or in consequence of the conference (which I will be attending).

@Rexford: Before I create the list for you, I require the following information:

    1. Should list archives be public or private?
    2. Should new subscriptions be approved by list moderators/administrators,
or should users be automatically subscribed upon confirmation (which
       they do themselves)?

Thank you!

Comment 10 Rexford 2014-06-25 17:37:36 UTC
List archive should be public.
List subscribing should be approved by moderators.
Comment 11 Tomasz W. Kozlowski 2014-06-25 17:50:18 UTC
The list has now been created, and I configured it to have public archives, with new members added after confirmation & moderator approval.

You can configure the rest of the settings, including list description and a terse identifying phrase at the following web page:

    https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/admin/african-wikimedians

The web page for users of your mailing list is:

    https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/african-wikimedians

The list will also be available in the e-mail to news gateway Gmane.org as

    gmane.org.wikimedia.africa

Please list and describe your mailing list at the appropriate section of:

    https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Overview

I just sent the admin password to the two given e-mail addresses, and made them list administrators.

This request is now closed; enjoy your new mailing list!

            Tomasz
