I am not convinced that we need this feature. Typing and pressing enter is normal UX here. Magnifying glass shown left to the search field here is an indicator and not a trigger.

I did a quick survey and Google, Bing and MediaWiki itself have the icon which is also clickable. Even if we don't have data how much those are used, we would be deviating from the "standard".
