Notice how the focus is on the 'W' and no text gets inserted TILL you focus the cursor location.

Good catch. Maybe the solution is that the keyboard doesn't pop up until you tap within the edit field. Users are only occasionally going to want to start typing at the end where the cursor would be by default; usually they will need to choose the right cursor location anyway before they begin typing. Starting from a view without the keyboard would make that step more efficient.
