Description Kunal Mehta (Legoktm) 2014-07-02 04:03:12 UTC
Like, what is it collecting? My browsing history? Saved pages? Does it record it with my username? How often is data collected?

I assume that by default it's on. If I opt-out because I didn't know I was being tracked, is my data retroactively deleted?

(This is the same on the Android app, and I think I picked the verbiage...)

This refers to EventLogging. Pains have been taken to make people as anonymous as possible. It collects:

1. Session tracking information, so we can see how many pages people view in a session.
2. Edit funnel tracking, to see how people go through the edit workflow.
3. ToC tracking (Android only) to see how people use the ToC
4. Login/Create account funnel tracking.
5. Saved page tracking. Note that this does not track which saved pages you are viewing/saving.
6. Tracking of HTTPS errors, primarily to check on the censorship situation in China.
7. (Sampled) log of the operator your phone is on. There was a wikimedia-l discussion about it, IIRC.

https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3APrefixIndex&prefix=MobileWikiApp&namespace=470 has the full list of the Schemas we use for tracking.

Might change in the future. Your username is only recorded in the edit funnel, along with the revid if your page is saved. I've also tried to minimize possibilities of corelating the various events to form a more complete picture by using different randomly generated unique IDs.

And no, if you opt out, it is not retroactive.

I think I picked the sentence from either Firefox or one of the Google apps, unsure.
Comment 3 Yuvi Panda 2014-07-06 19:20:21 UTC
Alternating suggestions welcome :)

I'll also note that most of these are tracked on the web too (Mobile and Desktop), but don't have opt outs.

Those mainly seem reasonable.

Can we put your list from comment 1 on a page on foundationwiki or something, and then include a "More information" link pointing to it underneath the setting?

It's not really feasible to fill the app with information on what our EventLogging does and what information is collected.

Anyway, this isn't really an app issue anymore.

Yes, that's why I suggested just putting it on foundationwiki and including a link.

It's not?

Basically what the new "Wikipedia Zero FAQ" link is.
