The media viewer loads a scaled down version of the entire full size image rather than a thumbnail appropriate for your screen size.

Since full size images can be up to 100 MB in size, this could be awful for someone on a strict data plan.

Nevermind. It actually just loads an image twice the resolution of the width of your window, which makes sense. I just happened to be using a very large window :)
