Description Nemo 2014-07-29 12:32:46 UTC
It happens semi-regularly that LocalisationUpdate bugs for Wikimedia projects end up in the wrong queue. For sure they're rather scattered:
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/buglist.cgi?f1=longdesc&f2=short_desc&j_top=OR&list_id=332749&o1=regexp&o2=regexp&product=Wikimedia&query_format=advanced&v1=%28l10n-%3Fupdate|LU%20|Locali[sz]ationUpdate%29&v2=%28l10n-%3Fupdate|LU%20|Locali[sz]ationUpdate%29

It would IMHO be useful if they had a more specific component than just "General/Unknown", also to have correct CCs by default. The recently created "Deployment systems" component sounds about right given name+description ("Tools to deploy code on Wikimedia servers / cluster") and owners (ops and platform), but it would need new CCs and a description addition like "including l10nupdate specific to Wikimedia, as opposed to generic MediaWiki extensions > LocalisationUpdate".

Alternatively, a new component could be created (:|) or "Language setup" may be reused as name (it's not very busy nowadays, but would need drastic changes in description and maintainers).
Comment 1 Antoine "hashar" Musso (WMF) 2014-07-29 14:00:36 UTC
That is part of the Deployment systems. I don't think it justify a dedicated component under Wikimedia.

Agreed.

Suggestions welcome :)

Really? I'm just wary of description bloat.

Those in CC here for instance.
It would also help if the component was documented at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Developers/Maintainers#Operations.2Fsystems_administration

Could be made shorter, e.g. "including l10nupdate/LocalisationUpdate specific to Wikimedia". If moved now, it would be half of the reports contained in the component, quite relevant.

Amir, Brad, Bryan, Roan, and Reedy: Mind being added to the default CC of Deployment Tooling bugs in Bugzilla?

Will do post the above/below change.

Sure. Long descriptions will look fine in the grand future of Phabricator anyways, so I don't mind.

I don't know if I should be on CC for all deployment tooling, but getting any updates about LU is a good thing for me. Kartik and Niklas may be interested, too.

"Luckily" about 50% of the bugs in Deployment Tooling will be LU related, so you'll probably have a decent S/N ratio ;)

No, I don't mind at all. I think folks manually cc me on a lot of these issues already. Sometimes I can even help. :)

I don't know that I'd be particularly useful as a default CC on Deployment Tooling; I just seem to have been the one who enjoys digging down the code paths to find why exactly l10nupdate is breaking when it's something non-obvious.
Comment 9 Andre Klapper 2014-08-06 13:39:02 UTC
Component description updated to "Tools to deploy code on Wikimedia servers / cluster, including l10nupdate/LocalisationUpdate specific to Wikimedia".
Also added bdavis to default CC as expressed in comment 7.

Can't judge signal/noise ratio and interests for Amir and Brad, hence not added them to default CC for the time being.
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/buglist.cgi?component=Deployment%20systems&product=Wikimedia lists the ~90 items in that category if anybody wants to take a look and make up their minds.
