References in MediaWiki view mode (rendering correctly)

This is most likely due to Cite, but the extension works in "view" mode and fails in VE in my local wiki.

The problem:

Citations/References work well in view mode but when VE loads, they appear as their "raw" tags <ref>Something</ref> and <references />.

More details: From within VE, even when the references appear broken like above, I can still add a reference, which renders correctly as [1]. When I save the page the wikitext is correct and the view mode recognizes all references (both those that were broken and those that were just inserted). Then if I re-edit the page, the references are broken again.

Details -

Cite extension is installed from the git repository, and this line is in LocalSettings.php:
require_once "$IP/extensions/Cite/Cite.php";

This happens in Chrome 36.0.1985.125 and Firefox 31.0 under Ubuntu 14.04

Apparently, the solution was to update and restart Parsoid.
