Description Santhosh Thottingal 2014-08-09 14:33:01 UTC
If article title is not given explicitly, we can apply MT on title too. For example if you translate Fuego from es to ca, the target title can be converted to foc using MT.

As I said at the Wikimania talk, I'm not sure that it should be done in all cases. For a lot of articles it makes sense to keep the old title. Maybe we should keep it for articles in some categories and translated for articles in other categories. This is really something that we should base on user feedback.

This must be done for non-Latin languages.

Very often - yes, but even in these cases some languages prefer Latin names for some articles.

Also, we may want to use item labels from Wikidata when they are available.

This is something for which I'd love more input from the editors community. It's probably very easy to simply add the same machine translation tool to the heading, but it's also an area where we should go the extra mile.

This is what I meant - use MT for target title when the user did not give a target title - as a suggestion. Currently we fallback to source title. If a user gives target title, we should not do anything.

And yes, it can be a label from Wikidata too, if available.
