Description Jacklee 2014-08-10 20:16:34 UTC
Over the past few days I have been unable to upload using Special:UploadWizard. For example, I tried uploading four files. It has been more than 15 minutes, but I cannot get past the initial uploading stage (the throbbers just spin continuously and "0 of 4 files uploaded" is shown).

Hi Jacklee.

Can you tell us what browser you're using, and what operating system?

Also, if you know how, I'd love it if you looked at the web browser's console and checked for any fatal errors that may help us find out what's wrong.

Thanks!

Where exactly? https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Upload ?

For browser error console output (as requested by Mark), see:

I was uploading at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard, using Mozilla Firefox 31.0.

The web console says: "TypeError: file is undefined" and "load.php:8".
Comment 4 Jacklee 2014-08-10 20:41:37 UTC
I was just trying to upload some standard JPEG photographs taken with my iPhone 5. I haven't had problems uploading them before.
Comment 5 Andre Klapper 2014-08-10 21:12:49 UTC
Sorry, but could you try again with https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard?debug=true to get filenames in the output instead of a generic "load.php"?
Comment 6 Jacklee 2014-08-11 11:19:31 UTC
Done. Here is the web console output:

"JQMIGRATE: Logging is active" load.php:10332
"mw.FirefoggHandler::start> Upload start!" load.php:13296
TypeError: file is undefined mw.FormDataTransport.js:47
Comment 7 Andre Klapper 2014-08-16 11:05:42 UTC
"FirefoggHandler"?
That sounds like ancient past, and I wonder where this comes from.

mtraceur: Any idea?
Comment 8 Jacklee 2014-08-31 19:22:07 UTC
By the way, I tried using the UploadWizard with Google Chrome Version 36.0.1985.143 m, and didn't have any problems. This seems to be an issue confined to Mozilla Firefox.
Comment 9 Mark Holmquist 2014-08-31 19:23:47 UTC
Jacklee, Firefogg is a Firefox extension. Could you try turning it off?
Comment 10 Jacklee 2014-09-01 08:17:15 UTC
I disabled Firefogg and UploadWizard is now working properly on Mozilla Firefox. However, the reason I installed Firefogg in the first place was to be able to convert videos for uploading to the Commons, as suggested at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Converting_video#Firefogg: "Firefogg is a cross platform browser extension for Firefox which is supported by UploadWizard to automatically convert and upload almost any video file. Just download and install firefogg and use the UploadWizard as normal."

If for some reason Firefogg is no longer compatible with Firefox, then this guideline needs to be amended. What alternative program would you suggest I use for video conversions?
Comment 11 Andre Klapper 2014-09-07 19:16:30 UTC
I guess that https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Converting_video#Firefogg is simply outdated then. Other recommendations are already listed in that section. For more alternative programs I'd recommend to ask on corresponding talk pages on Commons.

Still no idea if there's something to make UploadWizard more robust here or whether this ticket is considered invalid. mtraceur?

We aren't sure why Firefogg stopped working, but it's not currently a priority. I'd say it's a valid bug that we need to deal with eventually.
