Description Bene* 2014-09-01 18:03:00 UTC
Currently we handle identifiers to external databases as statements. They are however exactly the same as the Wikimedia sitelinks, pages which are about the same topic. Supporting them as sitelinks will make hacks like the AuthorityControl gadget obsolete and describe the actual subject in a much better way. It's also what we basically want to implement in the UI redesign.

This issue was raised on https://github.com/wmde/WikibaseDataModel/issues/174#issuecomment-54054249

I have large doubts about this. Before we more forward with this I want a discussion about the pros and cons.

So this bug is about the Wikibase Repo config on Wikidata.org?
Comment 3 Bene* 2014-09-01 19:33:45 UTC
Perhaps we'll need more than a config change for this, maybe an own extension but yes, it only affects the Wikibase Repo on Wikidata.org so far.
Comment 4 Lydia Pintscher 2014-09-24 09:40:08 UTC
I've been thinking about this some more. I don't want us to treat them exactly like sitelinks. I'd like to keep them as statements and just have a list of which properties to handle in a special way.

Some more insight: I don't want us to have to break the existing ones. I want to give the option to use qualifiers and references where necessary. Not all identifiers will be unique. Not all identifiers will have a link to somewhere.
